SPAR Challenge International Netball Test Preview

Elite netball action returns this week, as the England Vitality Roses and SPAR Proteas prepare for a three-match international Test series at Ellis Park Arena, Johannesburg, from Thursday 29 January to Sunday 1 February. This highly anticipated encounter will see two of the world’s top-ranked teams go head-to-head in preparation for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The SPAR Challenge International Netball Test Series marks the first headline netball clash of the year for both nations, who are currently ranked fourth and fifth in the world.

South Africa head into the series with a settled but competitive group, as Jenny van Dyk blends international experience with emerging talent as they prepare to play on home soil:

Head-to-Head & Recent Form

The two sides last met in 2025 at the Vitality Netball Nations Cup, where England won their first Nations Cup however the sides finished with one win apiece. South Africa struck first, edging a tense 61-59 victory through relentless defensive pressure and composed shooting that disrupted England’s attacking rhythm.

On the final day, the Roses responded with more assured performances than in subsequent fixtures, culminating in a composed display that overturned an early deficit. The Roses, having trailed 15-12 after the first quarter,  claimed a 61-55 victory, showcasing improved shooting accuracy and greater control through the midcourt as the game progressed. Goal defence Funmi Fadoju earned player of the match honours, as the London Pulse defender helped England steadily build their lead through the second and third quarters before holding off a late South African rally, with some crucial intercepts.

Historically, clashes between the SPAR Proteas and the Vitality Roses have often been decided by tactical adjustments and execution under pressure. With both teams looking to set the tone for the year ahead, early authority in this series could prove crucial.

England – Recent Form

England arrive with a mixed but valuable run of results against top-tier opposition. A defeat to world number two, New Zealand, exposed areas still requiring refinement, particularly in transition and attacking patience under pressure. However, the Roses responded impressively with a composed victory over Jamaica, demonstrating improved cohesion through the midcourt and greater efficiency in the shooting circle.
